you can do it! just keep experimenting. try this, soak the paper down with water. get it really wet and let dry over night. the water color paper will get super tight, like a drum! then you can paint on it. its a different feel but you can do some great things when it's that way.
also, different effects of color with watercolor paint can be done with different percentages of wet area. 100% wet will make the painting bleed in a feather effect, where 10% much much much less.
last, try to paint, then let it dry and come back to it later, or use a blow dryer to speed the drying up. thats how pros work. watercolor can be painting it all in one shot or in layers, steps. letting the color dry 100% before working on top of it.
